The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food, laboratory, and companion animal species. Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agriculture, and human health. The Department’s 16 faculty members, many internationally recognized, have diverse interests in animal management, breeding, genetics, physiology, nutrition, growth biology, and microbiology.

We seek a scientist and extension educator who will integrate new and existing biological knowledge into quantitative system level descriptions of dairy cattle nutrition and management to improve economic outcomes and environmental sustainability of dairy operations. The individual hired will develop a research program focused on the biology of nutrient use by dairy cattle and the integration of biology, economics and biogeochemical processes into models that can be used to optimize nutrient use and contribute to improved environmental sustainability at the farm level. Areas of biological focus may include but are not limited to optimization of forage use on farms with agronomic and soil nutrient supplies, integration of nutrition, behavior and health in dairy cattle, and optimization of milk composition relative to nutrient supply and excretion. Modeling activities are expected to lead to improved competitiveness of and environmental stewardship by the dairy industry in the Northeast and beyond. This work could focus on but is not limited to improved mechanistic descriptions of metabolic processes, further integration of growth, maintenance, reproduction and lactation, ways of addressing individual animal and geographical environmental variability, and strategies for simultaneously optimizing for multiple objectives. Opportunities exist to support further development of models such as the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) to achieve the above aims.

This position is a 9-month research (50%) and extension (50%) appointment. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2016 or as negotiated.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Applicants should have strong experimental biology and quantitative skills and be committed to the integration of biological information into industry-relevant models of nutrient use in dairy cattle and the translation of these models to practice. Expertise and/or interest in dairy cattle nutrition, metabolism, and applied modeling and a Ph.D. in animal nutrition or other potentially relevant fields (e.g., agricultural engineering, agronomy, systems biology) are required. Postdoctoral and/or dairy industry expertise as well as an interest or expertise in the environmental aspects of dairy production are preferred. Ideal candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills and potential for leadership. We enthusiastically invite applications from women and underrepresented minority groups.
